Election Integrity

The Sonoma County Republican Party has an Election Integrity Task Force.

If you would like to volunteer on the Task Force, work on a "bite-size" task, be an Observer and/or work at a Vote Center (aka Polling Place), please email us at electionintegrity@sonomacountygop.org

During every Election, our volunteers participate in the following areas:
1) Logic & Accuracy Certification at the Registrar of Voters office (ROV)
2) Observe at the ROV
3) Observe at the 31 Vote Centers & 21 Ballot Drop Boxes
4) Watch the 1% Tally before the election is certified
5) Work at a Vote Center (aka Polling Place) as a Poll Clerk *

* If you are interested in working at a Vote Center (aka Polling Place) the ROV will train you, but you first have to apply, so click on the link below and after you have done that email us at electionintegrity@sonomacountygop.org so we can follow up with the ROV that they received your application.

Election Observer Program

Every major election, our Election Integrity Task Force comes together to observe election processes at 31 vote centers throughout Sonoma County and at the Registrar of Voters office in Santa Rosa. This includes most ballot handling processes. Observers are trained in advance to use prepared checklists and record their observations for inclusion in post-election reports. If you are interested in being a volunteer observer, please contact us and we’ll notify you when trainings will start.

Paid, temporary positions are available with the Registrar of Voters during elections. We encourage those interested in working at a vote center or at the Registrar of Voters to contact the Registrar well in advance of the election for information at Sonomacounty-rov.gov or (707) 565-6800.

Post Election Reports:

After each election, the Election Integrity Committee compiles all observer checklists and notes into a report that is provided as feedback to the Registrar of Voters and citizens. The reports highlight where security measures can be implemented locally to improve the integrity of the election system. Below are reports from past elections, which contain short executive summaries of our key findings to-date.

Key Report Findings:

In California, anyone with the name and address of a registered voter can vote that person’s ballot at a vote center if the voter hasn’t already voted. Most people vote on election day and vote centers are open for 11 days in advance under the Voters’ Choice election system. No ID is required and there is no signature verification for in-person ballots. In response to our 2nd report, the Registrar added a full birth date requirement and about half of workers ask for it as of the November 2024 election. This will help prevent voter fraud and is an example of how our observer program has already increased election integrity in Sonoma County.
Californina legislators began changing election laws in 2016 and almost all changes weakened election security. These changes included mailing out ballots to all registered voters using poorly-maintained (“stale”) voter rolls, allowing 11 days of early, in-person voting and seven days for ballots to arrive after election day, ballot harvesting and in September 2024, Governor Newsom outlawed voter ID. This pattern shows an intent to make it easy to vote and easy to cheat.
Sonoma County uses Dominion Voting machines for tabulating ballots. Observers have found the Logic & Accuracy Certification process doesn’t follow Dominion’s certification procedures, let alone an independently-prepared test deck of ballots. And the software version used by Sonoma County is not yet certified by the Election Assistance Commission. Most computer experts say voting machines are too vulnerable to manipulation to be trusted, yet Sonoma County continues to rapidly push voters toward  touchscreen terminals designed only for disabled voters. The touchscreen ballot printers are not tested as part of L&A certification and encode voter selections into an unreadable QR Code for tabulating.
Universal Vote by Mail ballots require many different processes to prepare for counting, including scanning, signature verification, multiple sorts and removal from the envelope. In combination with low staffing and no sense of urgency after election day, ballot counting and reporting results takes almost two weeks to report 90% of ballots received. With races shifting as ballots are returned, voters lose trust in the system and lose interest by the time the election is certified a month later.
