Congratulations to Sonoma County Astronaut

Sonoma County has the pleasure of recognizing NASA astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann.  Nicole grew up in Penngrove and graduated from Rancho Cotate High in 1995.  She commanded NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission.  Her Crew Dragon spacecraft Endurance splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico on March 11 after 157 days at the International Space Station.  Nicole and other astronauts conducted hundreds of experiments while they were orbiting the Earth at 17,500 mph.  Nicole is an enrolled member of the Round Valley Indian Tribes and is Wailacki on her mother’s side. Currently, Nicole is a Marine Corps Colonel and has deployed twice aboard the USS Enterprise in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Nicole has also discussed the difference between combat deployment and working with astronauts and mission controls from around the world.  Combat was seeing the absolute worst of humanity and the work in space was “the absolute best of the world, the best of humanity.”
