March 2023
Procedures Do Matter.
A senior center in Rohnert Park is updating its procedures in handling cash deposits. The change has occurred because $20,000 in cash donations was found missing from a senior center account.
Although the discrepancy was discovered in August 2022 it was not publicly disclosed until recently. The incident was reported to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety who then turned the investigation over to the Petaluma Police to avoid a conflict of interest.
Cash donations are normally received by staff and placed in a safe but employees reported after the discrepancy was discovered that the safe wasn’t locking properly. Staffing shortages led to missing funds not being immediately discovered. The city has since updated how cash is collected and counted including requiring that two employees be present when money is counted.
