Get Ready For Background Checks
President Biden has signed an executive order which proports to aim at reducing gun violence.
The aim of the order is to move the United States as close as possible to universal background checks without the passage of congressional legislation. The partisan divides in Congress have resulted in most gun safety legislation being stalled.
Currently, a federal background check is not required for private sales of firearms between individuals. The executive order could result in more individuals being classified as firearms dealers who are therefore required to conduct background checks for all sales. The new order directs the cabinet to join with law enforcement, healthcare providers and educators on public-awareness campaigns around red-flag laws and also asks them to expand existing federal campaigns that promote safe storage of firearms. Mr. Biden continues to press for Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and make background checks universal. Many people believe this latest presidential move is an effort to develop a national registry of gun owners.
